Cloud Lending was a sponsor at the recent Lendit conference in London. We came away with a positive feeling about the future of Marketplace Lending, and think there is a palpable buzz around the sector.

Attendees included people from all over the globe, and across financial services (not just marketplace lending). The usual suspects such as Zopa, Lendico and Funding Circle were present giving keynote speeches. The speeches were of great interest and tackled some of the underlying issues that marketplace lending is facing. This included technological, regulatory and economic concerns that many believe the sector is too young to have experience of yet.

There were also larger established financial players that have been through several economic cycles and lending trends. These included large investment banks and investment funds that are closely following the sector. They discussed and considered where they thought the industry was headed and the pitfalls to avoid. One of the key messages was that the demand for quality marketplace loans seems to be greater than the supply. Investors seemed eager to put money through platforms (as debt investments), but felt there weren’t enough loans or platforms that met their investment criteria.

At our booth, we came across a lot of start-ups that want to take advantage of this growing sector, and replicate the marketplace model in their respective countries. These included people from Asia, Middle-East, Africa and Australia. They are actively looking for technological solutions that can enable them go to market quickly.

One of the positive signs at the conference was that these entrepreneurs were well equipped in their knowledge about the sector, and had robust business plans and processes. Start-ups no longer seem to be jumping into marketplace lending on a whim but have a well-structured strategy in place. They are coming up with unique products and business models, which we believe will expedite marketplace lending’s transition from the side-lines into the mainstream.

Lendit Europe was a great event for people seriously interested in the sector (the presentations and speeches are available here http://blog.lendit.co/). We would like to thank the organizers for putting together a great conference, and look forward to attending more in the future.
